Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Special Collections special?

We call it special because we house material that, due to subject coverage, rarity, source, or form, are best handled separately from the Main Library Collection.

Where are you located?

Special Collections is located on the entrance level of the Main Library which occupies the southwest corner of University Boulevard and Cherry Avenue.

Where can I park?

A metered visitor parking lot is located between Cherry St. and Warren St. directly to the east of Arizona Stadium (the football stadium). For other parking options, consult the campus parking maps .

Do I need special qualifications to use Special Collections?

No. Special Collections is open to anyone who wishes to use the materials. This includes not only our primary customers - UA faculty, staff, and students - but members of the community and the general public as well.

What kind of things can I bring with me into the Special Collections reading room?

You need to bring a form of identification that includes a photograph. After you sign in, you will need to check all of your belongings into a locker. You may keep loose paper, pencils, and laptops (without cases). For more information, consult our Reading Room Policy.

Do I need to make an appointment to use Special Collections?

No, reservations are not required to use Special Collections. However, if you have an in-depth research question, it may be best to contact a librarian or archivist prior to your visit. We also encourage you to use our searching tools to become familiar with the collection before visiting Special Collections.

How can I get photocopies of particular items? What do photocopies cost?

Most types of the materials in Special Collections can be photocopied for a fee. Decisions on whether materials can be photocopied are made based on copyright law and the physical condition of the materials. Fees for photocopying typically range from 10-25 cents per page. Self-service photocopying is not available. Contact Special Collections for more details.

May I get a copy of a photograph? How much does it cost? How long does it take?

Digital files can be made from photographs in Special Collections. To order digital reproductions of photographs, please fill out the Digital Reproductions Form. May I use photographs from Special Collections in my publication, broadcast, or exhibit?

Yes, but you must request permission first by filling out the Application for Permission to Publish, Broadcast, or Exhibit Special Collections Material. Applications may be mailed to Special Collections or faxed to the Reproductions Department at (520) 349-0910. Visit the contact page for our address.

Does Special Collections have a Collection Development Policy?

I'm interested in donating materials to Special Collections. What should I do?

Special Collections may accept donations of materials that fit into our collecting scope. If you have something to donate or wish to make a monetary gift, you may contact us via our web form.

I have an old book. Can you tell me how much it is worth?

We cannot provide formal appraisals, however we can provide a list of appraisers.
