General Information
The library offers a retrieval service to provide greater convenience for library users! The library will now retrieve items off the library shelves and place them directly on the hold shelf for you to come and pick up.
This service is only available to UA faculty, staff and students who have a valid CatCard and a library account in good standing.
The following items can be retrieved from the Main, Science, Fine Arts, and Center for Creative Photography Libraries:
- Books
- Videos, DVDs, and CDs
While our turnaround time is 24 hours, refer to the schedule for pick up times.

DVD & VHS Requests
The Main Library Media collection is being relocated to a closed stack area. To access DVDs and VHS materials, submit a request following the steps below .

Restrictions
We cannot retrieve or hold the following types of material:
- Any items from the Health Science or Law Libraries.
- Atlases, Maps
- Bound Journals, Current Journals
- CCP Rare Books
- Newspapers
- Laptops
- Microforms
- Music CDs, Music Closed Stacks
- Other types of media (Laserdiscs, 16 mm films, etc.)
- Reference material
- Special Collections items
There is not a limit on the number of items an eligible person may request, but the library will reserve the right to process no more than ten items per person per day when there is a heavy demand.
Submitting Requests
1. Log into your library account by clicking on the ‘My Account’ link found in the top right corner of any Library web page.
2. From your account, click on the Search the Catalog link.
3. Search the catalog by Keyword, Author, Title or Subject .
4. At the Search Results page, click on the title you wish to request to access the full record.
5. Click the button displayed at the top and bottom of your screen.
Picking Up Requests
Your requested item will be retrieved from the shelf and placed in the Holds Area of the owning library within 24 hours.
You will be notified by email when the item is ready for pick-up or if you want know the instant an item is available, you can log into ‘My Account’ at any time. Please note, if the item was listed as being checked out, a recall will be issued and the item should be expected to arrive within 10 days to allow the current user sufficient time to return the item.
Holds may be picked up during regular building hours from the open hold shelves at:
- Main Library: across from the main entrance (2nd floor) of the Main Library.
- Science-Engineering Library: behind the Information Desk near the entrance to the Reference/Current Periodicals Room.
- Fine Arts Library: across from the Information Desk. (Note: This includes holds for CCP Library materials as well.)
Holds are arranged by call number and have no information about the patron who requested the item in order to protect patron privacy. It is suggested that when picking up a hold you bring the call number with you for easy access.
Items will be held for seven days after being paged. If an item has additional holds, it can only be checked-out for seven days.
Cancelled Requests
If you receive a request cancellation notice it is due to one of the following reasons:
- The requested item can not be located on the shelves and has been declared missing by staff and placed on search. Some items will turn up after extensive searching, but it is suggested that if you need the item quickly to request via Interlibrary Loan .
- The item that you requested is located at either the Health Sciences or Law Library.
