Includes over 4,000 articles about topics in the social and behavioral sciences, including concepts in anthropology. Also of use: Area Studies, Area and International Studies, Development and Modernization Studies, and Global/International Studies.

Encyclopedia of Anthropology

New online encyclopedia with concepts, people and countries included.

Bibliographies are very current.

The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (open access)
Basic definitions of concepts and correct spelling (!).

Resources for country data and articles

Country Profiles

The profiles offer brief, summarized information on a country’s historical background, geography, society, economy, transportation and telecommunications, government and politics, and national security. Mali's was done in 2005

 

Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)

The Country Profile is the most useful document in this data base. Country Profiles outline a country’s economic and political status and background. They give an annual perspective on the long-term political and social issues affecting each country. Note that there is an archive of these profiles going back to 1996. The Country Reports are intended for financial forcasting.

HINT: you may find Mali by going to Africa and the Middle East as a region or from the alphabetical list of all countries.


Europa World Plus

Europa World Plus is the online version of the Europa World Year Books and the nine volumes Regional Surveys of the World series. Updated regularly, this reference sources covers political and economic information in more than 250 countries and territories, and includes information about NGOs and IGOs. Each country has a bibliography at the end of the description!!!

HINT:  Use the country search option to go directly to the Mali section, or use the menu on the left side of the screen for a larger, regional perspective on "Africa South of the Sahara."

Academic Search Complete

Good place to begin searching for articles. This data base allows you to select only the academic journal articles. There are many links to full text. The subject coverage ranges from education to social conditions to science and health.

ABI/Inform

Includes citations and abstracts of articles in over 1000 academic journals, magazines, and newspapers, of which over half are full-text. Broad subject coverage of business and social sciences.  

HINT:  for optimal results, do a topic search for "Mali(location) ."

Business Source Complete

Contains country reports and articles about countries including economic and social conditions.

Black Studies Center

The International Index to Black Periodicals is now part of the is data base. Be sure to limit your search to the IIBP which contains current and retrospective bibliographic citations and abstracts to articles from over 150 scholarly and popular journals, newspapers, and newsletters from the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean, with some full-text coverage of nearly 20 core Black Studies periodicals. Coverage is international and multidisciplinary, spanning cultural, economic, historical, political, religious and social issues of importance to Black Studies disciplines. Updated monthly.

AnthroSource
The full text of the most critical journals published by the American Anthropological Association. Text goes back to 2003; older issues are available via links to JSTOR.

HINT:  use the Advanced Search function to restrict your search to articles with "Mali" somewhere in the title.


Anthropology Plus
The resource for Anthropology students. Covers the fields of social, cultural, physical, biological, and linguistic anthropology, ethnology, archaeology, folklore, material culture, and interdisciplinary studies.

HINT:  Search for "Mali" as a subject word instead of a keyword.

Sociological Abstracts
Citations and abstracts to articles from an international collection of journal titles as well as abstracts to dissertations, and conference proceedings. Subject focus includes sociology, family studies, gerontology, sociolinguistics and related fields.

Gender Issues

UA Libraries' pathfinder for Women's Studies
Lists of encyclopedias and dictionaries on women's studies and women's issues, links to websites about women and women's studies, and lots of useful information on women in the United States and overseas. Includes links to the UA Libraries' databases on gender studies; Gender Studies Database and GenderWatch are particularly recommended.

HINT:  In GenderWatch, use "Citation and document text" to find articles about Mali.

Health and Nutrition

Health Reference Center (UA access only)
Encyclopedia and dictionary entries, pamphlets, reference resources and journal articles from scholarly/academic and popular magazines on health, nutrition, disease, and medicine around the world.

HINT:  Information about Mali is often contained in articles about Sub-Saharan Africa or West Africa, so try searches for Sub-Saharan Africa and West Africa as well as Mali. All three are used as subject terms in this data base.!

MedLine

Index to over 11 million medical and health related articles dating back to the mid-1960's. Many are clinical and detailed. (Each version contains the same information but with different search interfaces.)

PopLine (UA access only)
Provides worldwide coverage of population, family planning, and related health issues, including family planning technology and programs, fertility, and population law and policy from journal articles, monographs, technical reports, and unpublished works. The database includes abstracts. Some of the articles are free through links. Others are available for a fee. Check the library catalog to see if we own what you're looking for. If we don't and you are a University of Arizona student, faculty or staff you can request the journal article, book or technical report through InterLibrary Loan for free.

HINT:  Mali/West Africa will search both at once.
